Open Call for Papers: ROMANTIK – JOURNAL FOR THE STUDY OF ROMANTICISMS

Since the inauguration of Romantik – Journal for the Study of Romanticisms in 2012, the plural of romanticisms has been central. The intention was to welcome Nordic and other transnational articles that ranged over a variety of approaches to romanticism, including the written word, visual arts, history, philosophy, religion and print history. In 2020, a new editorial board widened the scope of romanticisms to include later expressions of Romantic thought operating with different forms of re-enchantment. We welcome both papers that deal with the epoque of romanticism as well as those addressing later expressions of Romantic thought.

Kultakausi ja kulttuurinen muisti

Gallen-Kallelan Museo, lauantai 5.3.2022 kello 13-15

Miten käsitys kultakaudesta on syntynyt? Millaisia tarkoituksia se on palvellut? Mitä kaikkea se on jättänyt varjoonsa? Miten myyttisen kertomuksen tilalle voidaan tuottaa moniäänistä historiankirjoitusta, jossa aiemmin vaiennettujen ja marginalisoitujen yksilöiden ja ihmisryhmien näkökulmat pääsevät esiin? Keskustelemassa Marja Lahelma, Hanna-Reetta Schreck, Nina Kokkinen ja Petra Lehtoruusu.

“European Revivals: From Dreams of a Nation to Places of Transnational Exchange” – New Publication by the Finnish National Gallery

“The themes drawn from the key ideas supporting the European Revivals project are still powerfully resonant in the early 21st century. People’s lifestyles, indigenous material culture, national myths, forming personal or collective identities and the meaning of native landscape or nature in general still have an enduring significance today.”
Anna-Maria von Bonsdorff and Riitta Ojanperä in the foreword to European Revivals: From Dreams of a Nation to Places of Transnational Exchange.

This multifaceted and rich publication contains thirteen articles exploring the connections and correspondences that have helped to shape the identities of modern European nations. It marks the culmination of the ‘European Revivals’ research project and its accompanying series of six international conferences inaugurated in Helsinki in 2009 with subsequent conferences held also in Oslo, Krakow and Edinburgh.

The complete book can be downloaded as a Pdf on the Finnish National Gallery’s website at research.fng.fi.

Tahiti-lehden erikoisnumero tarjoaa uusia näkökulmia Ellen Thesleffin tuotantoon

Tahiti-verkkolehden tuorein numero tarjoaa viisi näkökulmaa Ellen Thesleffin moniulotteiseen taiteelliseen tuotantoon. Kirjoittajina ovat Anna-Maria von Bonsdorff, Marja Lahelma, Riikka Stewen, Hanna-Reetta Schreck ja Asta Kihlman. Esseet kuljettavat lukijaa läpi koko Thesleffin tuotannon lähtien alun symbolistisesta vaiheesta ja varhaisista 1890-luvun valokuvista, jatkaen 1900-luvun alun Italian-kauden ekspressionismiin ja sen suhteeseen muun muassa futurismiin, vitalismiin, liikkeeseen ja tanssiin.

Call for Papers – Art, Life and Place: Looking at European Transnational Exchange in the Long 19th Century

Celebrating the completion of the European Revivals research project 2009–2020

International Conference, 20–23 January 2020, Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki

This conference marks the culmination of our series of international conferences that began in 2009 and have been held in Helsinki, Oslo, Krakow and Edinburgh.

We invite researchers and museum professionals to the European Revivals International Conference – Art, Life and Place: Looking at European Transnational Exchange in the Long 19th Century. The conference takes place in Helsinki, 20–23 January 2020, and includes the reception, the two-day conference and an excursion day.

The theme of the 6th European Revivals conference, which concludes the series, focuses on the importance of place in the context of artistic life and practice, including artists’ communities, geographical environments, social spaces and studio contexts. We are looking for presentations addressing the developments in European transnational exchange during the period from the 1870s to the 1930s. In particular, we pose the question of how and where art, life and place meet and create new perspectives.

Proposals (300 words max) for 20-minute presentations, and a brief curriculum vitae should be sent to the Finnish National Gallery’s research web magazine address fngr@nationalgallery.fi marked for the attention of the scientific committee of the conference: Dr. Anna-Maria von Bonsdorff, Dr. Riitta Ojanperä and Dr. Hanna-Leena Paloposki.

Deadline for proposals 30 September 2019

The keynote speakers and full details of the conference programme will be announced by 31 October 2019

Related exhibitions

The 2020 conference will be accompanied by two exhibitions that relate to the conference theme:

Through My Travels I Found Myself – Helene Schjerfbeck

The exhibition ‘Through My Travels I Found Myself’ focuses specifically on Schjerfbeck’s trips to Pont-Aven in northern France, Fiesole in Italy, and St Ives in Cornwall at the end of the 19th century. It explores the significance of the artist’s travels for her work – and how she was inspired by what she saw.

Finnish Artists in Ruovesi

The Finnish region of Ruovesi, its lakes and countryside, has attracted artists since the 1820s. The exhibition sheds light on these artists’ shared interest in the place, its nature, people and culture and how they influenced their art. Among the artists featured in the exhibition are Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931), Hugo Simberg (1873–1917) andEllen Thesleff (1869–1954).
